Therapy for Low Self-Esteem

Online counselling to address harsh self-criticism, self-doubt and low self-worth. Build a steadier relationship with yourself, backed by evidence.

Low self-esteem is rarely about confidence in a skill. It is a belief about your worth that you learned early and have been quietly confirming ever since.

Signs you might recognise

You do not need to identify with all of these. Even a few is reason enough to talk to someone.

A running internal commentary that is harsher than you'd be to anyone else
Struggling to accept compliments or credit
Over-apologising and over-explaining
Setting standards you'd never expect others to meet
Staying in situations you've outgrown because you doubt you deserve better
Fear of being 'found out' despite evidence of competence
Difficulty saying no
Comparing yourself unfavourably and constantly

Why this happens

Core beliefs about worth are usually formed long before you could evaluate them — through comparison at home, conditional approval, academic pressure, or criticism that became internalised as fact. Once formed, they operate as a filter: evidence that fits is absorbed, evidence that doesn't is dismissed as luck or charity. This is why achievement so rarely raises self-esteem on its own. The filter has to change, not the CV.

How therapy helps

What the work actually involves, session by session.

1

Identifying the core belief

We trace the specific belief — 'I'm not enough', 'I'm a burden' — and where it came from. Naming its origin loosens the sense that it is simply true.

2

Building a fair evidence log

Structured recording of overlooked positive evidence retrains the filter over time. It feels artificial for a fortnight and then it doesn't.

3

Self-compassion work

Research consistently links self-compassion to better mental health outcomes than self-esteem chasing. We work on the tone you use with yourself.

4

Behaviour that matches worth

Asking for things, setting boundaries, accepting help — behaviour change is what makes the new belief credible.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't self-esteem just something you're born with?
Temperament plays a part, but core beliefs about worth are learned and can be revised. Self-esteem work is one of the more consistently rewarding areas of therapy.
How is this different from motivational content?
Motivational content addresses the surface. Therapy addresses the belief structure underneath, which is why the effects last past the initial lift.
Will I become arrogant?
No. The aim is accuracy, not inflation — seeing yourself fairly, including your limitations, without contempt.
How long does this work take?
Core belief work is deeper than symptom work and usually runs three to six months. Most people notice their internal tone shifting well before that.
