Counselling for Family Conflict

Individual online counselling for family conflict, parental expectations and in-law tension. Confidential support for navigating difficult family dynamics.

You can love your family and still be exhausted by them. Counselling gives you somewhere to say that without being told you're being ungrateful.

Signs you might recognise

You do not need to identify with all of these. Even a few is reason enough to talk to someone.

Dreading family gatherings or phone calls
Guilt whenever you prioritise your own needs
Being the mediator or emotional manager for everyone
Career, marriage or lifestyle choices under constant scrutiny
Feeling like a different, smaller person around your parents
Conflict with in-laws you cannot raise with your partner
Financial obligations that quietly control your decisions
Silence used as punishment

Why this happens

Indian family systems are typically interdependent rather than individualistic — a structure with real strengths in support and continuity, and real costs in autonomy. Difficulty often arises where an individual's choices diverge from the family's expectations around career, marriage, religion or living arrangements. Western therapy models that default to 'go low contact' translate poorly here, where the practical, financial and emotional stakes of estrangement are substantially higher. The work is usually about navigating rather than escaping.

How therapy helps

What the work actually involves, session by session.

1

Naming what is actually happening

Many clients have never described their family dynamic aloud to a neutral person. That alone is clarifying.

2

Boundaries that fit your context

Realistic, culturally workable boundaries — not imported scripts that would cost you your entire support system.

3

Managing guilt

Guilt is the mechanism that enforces the pattern. We work on tolerating it rather than obeying it.

4

Deciding what you will and won't carry

Some obligations you will choose to keep. The difference is that you will have chosen them.

Frequently asked questions

Is it disloyal to discuss my family in therapy?
No. Therapy is not a complaint forum; it is where you make sense of relationships that matter to you. Understanding your family usually increases compassion rather than reducing it.
Do you offer family therapy sessions with everyone present?
Insights Wellbeing offers individual therapy, so sessions are with you alone. Individual work on family dynamics is often more feasible and can shift the system considerably.
My parents don't believe in therapy. Should I tell them?
That is entirely your decision, and sessions are confidential. Many clients attend without telling family, at least initially.
Can therapy help with in-law conflict specifically?
Yes — this is a very common presenting issue, and it usually involves the partner relationship as much as the in-laws themselves.
