How Much Does Therapy Cost in India?

A transparent guide to what therapy costs in India, what drives price differences, how many sessions you'll need, and how to make it affordable.

Cost is the second most common reason people delay therapy, after time. Here is a straightforward explanation of what you're paying for and how to plan it.

The details

Written in plain language, without jargon.

1

What drives the price

Session fees in India vary widely and are driven mainly by the therapist's qualification level and years of experience, whether the session is online or in-clinic, the city, and whether you book single sessions or a package. Clinical psychologists with an MPhil and RCI registration typically charge more than counselling psychologists, and senior practitioners more than early-career ones.

2

Online versus in-clinic

Online sessions are generally less expensive because there is no clinic overhead, and they eliminate travel cost and time — which for anyone in a major metro is often the larger saving of the two.

3

How many sessions you'll need

This matters more for total cost than the per-session fee. Focused concerns such as a specific phobia or insomnia often resolve in six to ten sessions. Anxiety and depression protocols commonly run twelve to twenty. Longstanding patterns and trauma work take longer. Ask your therapist for an estimate early — a good one will give you a range and revise it honestly.

4

Making it work financially

Packages usually reduce the per-session cost. Fortnightly sessions cost less per month than weekly and are appropriate for many people after an initial phase. Some employers offer EAP counselling benefits that go unused simply because staff don't know they exist — it is worth checking.

Frequently asked questions

Does health insurance cover therapy in India?
Following IRDAI direction, insurers are required to cover mental illness comparably to physical illness, but in practice coverage is usually limited to inpatient treatment. Outpatient therapy is rarely reimbursed. Check your specific policy wording.
Is a more expensive therapist better?
Not reliably. Fees reflect qualification and experience, but the strongest predictor of outcome is the fit between you and your therapist. A good match at a moderate fee outperforms a poor match at a high one.
Can I claim therapy as a medical expense?
Speak to a tax advisor about your specific circumstances — treatment for specified illnesses can attract deductions under certain sections of the Income Tax Act, but the conditions are narrow.
