Therapy for Health Anxiety

Online CBT for health anxiety and hypochondria. Stop the checking, googling and reassurance-seeking cycle with evidence-based therapy.

When every headache becomes a tumour and every test result brings only hours of relief, the problem is no longer your health. It's the anxiety about it.

Signs you might recognise

You do not need to identify with all of these. Even a few is reason enough to talk to someone.

Googling symptoms for hours despite knowing it makes things worse
Repeated body checking — lumps, pulse, moles, breathing
Multiple doctor visits and tests that come back clear
Brief relief after reassurance, then the doubt returning
Avoiding medical appointments entirely out of fear
Catastrophic interpretation of ordinary sensations
Difficulty trusting a clean scan or blood test
Anxiety about your health dominating daily conversation

Why this happens

Health anxiety runs on the same false-alarm mechanics as panic, applied to a longer time horizon. Ordinary bodily noise — which everyone has constantly — is interpreted as evidence of serious illness. Checking and reassurance-seeking reduce the anxiety briefly, which reinforces them powerfully, but they also increase attention to the body and lower your threshold for noticing the next sensation. The cycle tightens over time, and search engines have made it dramatically easier to feed.

How therapy helps

What the work actually involves, session by session.

1

Understanding the cycle

Seeing how checking and reassurance maintain the fear rather than resolve it is the turning point for most clients.

2

Cutting reassurance-seeking

We reduce googling, body checking and asking family for reassurance in planned steps, with support for the discomfort that follows.

3

Attention retraining

Learning to shift attention off the body deliberately reduces how much bodily noise you detect in the first place.

4

Relating differently to uncertainty

No test can promise lifelong health. Therapy builds the capacity to live well without that guarantee, which is what actually ends the cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What if I really do have something wrong?
Health anxiety and genuine illness are not mutually exclusive, and therapy never advises ignoring symptoms. The work involves agreeing a sensible medical protocol with your doctor and then stopping the excess checking that sits on top of it.
Is health anxiety the same as hypochondria?
Largely, yes — health anxiety is the current clinical term, and it is preferred because 'hypochondria' carries a dismissive tone the condition does not deserve. It causes real distress.
Does this get better?
Health anxiety responds well to CBT, typically within twelve to sixteen sessions. The checking behaviours usually reduce before the underlying fear does.
Did the pandemic make this worse?
Health anxiety presentations rose notably during and after COVID-19, and for many people the heightened body-monitoring habits formed then never fully switched off.
