Breakup and Separation Counselling

Support after a breakup, separation or divorce. Confidential online counselling to process the loss, rebuild identity and move forward at your pace.

The end of a relationship is a genuine bereavement, but rarely treated as one. You lose a person, a routine, a future you had already planned, and often a social world.

Signs you might recognise

You do not need to identify with all of these. Even a few is reason enough to talk to someone.

Checking their social media repeatedly
Oscillating between relief, rage and longing within a day
Difficulty eating, sleeping or concentrating at work
Rewriting the history — either idealising or demonising
Fear that you will not find anyone again
Loss of a sense of who you are outside the relationship
Pressure from family to explain, reconcile or remarry
Struggling to tell people it has ended

Why this happens

Attachment does not switch off when a relationship does. Neurologically, separation from an attachment figure produces distress resembling withdrawal, which is why the pull to contact them can feel physical rather than rational. Add the loss of routine, shared friends and an assumed future, and it becomes clear why breakups destabilise people so thoroughly. In India, separation and divorce also frequently carry family and social consequences that make private grief harder to protect.

How therapy helps

What the work actually involves, session by session.

1

Permission to grieve properly

Naming this as a loss, rather than something you should be over, is often the first relief.

2

Interrupting contact loops

Practical structures around checking, messaging and mutual friends, so you stop reopening the wound daily.

3

Understanding what happened

Not to assign blame, but so that the same pattern is less likely to repeat in the next relationship.

4

Rebuilding identity

Reconstructing interests, friendships and a sense of self that does not depend on the relationship you lost.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get over a breakup?
There is no fixed timeline, and comparisons are unhelpful. What predicts recovery better than time is whether you are processing the loss or avoiding it — which is exactly what counselling supports.
Is it silly to get therapy for a breakup?
No. Relationship dissolution is among the more common reasons adults seek therapy worldwide, and one of the most responsive to short-term support.
What if I want them back?
That is an entirely normal thing to feel and to say in session. Therapy explores it honestly rather than talking you out of it.
Can this help with divorce specifically?
Yes — including the additional layers of legal stress, co-parenting, financial change and family expectation that divorce brings.
