Therapy in Malayalam മലയാളം

Why therapy in your first language matters, and what Insights Wellbeing can offer. Sessions are currently in English and Hindi, not Malayalam.

Kerala's very large diaspora means a substantial share of Malayalam-language therapy requests come from outside India — clients in the Gulf and elsewhere who want to work in their first language across time zones.

Why your first language matters in therapy

Bilingual speakers process emotion differently across their languages. Research on this — often described as reduced emotional resonance in a second language — consistently finds that people report feeling less intensely when they speak about emotional material in a language learned later in life. That distance is useful when you want to stay composed in a meeting. It is a problem in therapy, where the aim is to reach the feeling rather than manage it.

There is a practical dimension too. Family structures, obligations, forms of address and the specific weight of certain expectations often have precise words in Malayalam and only clumsy approximations in English. When a client has to translate before speaking, two things get lost: accuracy, and the time spent explaining context instead of doing the work.

Malayalam is spoken widely across Kerala, and large Malayali communities across the Gulf, US and UK, and sessions are available for clients both in India and overseas.

What we can offer right now

Being straight with you about Malayalam matters more than winning your booking.

Insights Wellbeing does not currently offer sessions in Malayalam. Our practice is led by a single psychologist, Ms Priya Parwani, who works in English and Hindi. We would rather tell you that here than have you find out in your first session.

If Malayalam is important to you — and for many people it genuinely is — we are happy to help you find a practitioner who works in it. Write to us with what you are looking for and we will point you toward the directories and colleagues we trust, at no cost and with no expectation that you book with us.

If you are comfortable in English or Hindi, you are very welcome here. Many bilingual clients think in Malayalam and speak in English during sessions, and that works perfectly well — your therapist will follow your lead rather than hold you to one language.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer therapy in Malayalam?
Not at present. Insights Wellbeing is a solo practice and Ms Priya Parwani works in English and Hindi. We do not want to imply otherwise on a page about Malayalam.
Can you help me find a Malayalam-speaking therapist elsewhere?
Yes, and we are glad to. Email us with your city, budget and what you are hoping to work on, and we will suggest directories and colleagues worth approaching. There is no charge and no obligation to come back to us.
I think in Malayalam but speak English comfortably. Would sessions still work?
Almost certainly. Bilingual clients routinely think in one language and speak in another, and a good therapist follows your lead rather than forcing consistency. If a word only exists in your first language, use it and we will work out the meaning together.
Will you add Malayalam in future?
We hope so. Adding a language means adding a qualified practitioner who genuinely works in it, not running sessions through translation. If you would like to be told when that happens, let us know and we will keep a note.
